When Apple launched the iPhone 4S, many people were disappointed because it was basically a restructuring and revamp of the previous iPhone 4. A year later the iPhone 5 was launched. Some considerable upgrades had been incorporated in the latest iPhone 5 of Apple. But before choosing to buy or upgrade from an iPhone 4S one must know all the pros and cons of each of the mobiles.
Design
Both the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 share the same basic design structure. But the iPhone is a little bigger, sleeker and slimmer than the iPhone 4S. This makes the latest edition of the Apple smartphone more palm friendly than its predecessor. The iPhone 5 is also a bit lighter than the iPhone 4S despite being longer. This is because instead of the full glass based model of the iPhone 4S, a fusion of aluminum and glass was used for the iPhone 5. This design gave it a smoother and better finish and also considerably reduced its weight.
Display
The iPhone 5 has a 4 inch display compared to the iPhone 4S’s 3.5 inch. The pixel ratio in the iPhone 5 is 1136 by 640 pixels and is also better than the iPhone 4s’s 960 by 640 pixel. However both the phones have the same pixel density at 336ppi. But when it comes to colour production, viewing angles and brightness output, the iPhone 5 is much better than the iPhone 4S. The colours are more saturated and warmer and the distortion produced due to inclination of viewing is reduced to a great extent in the iPhone 5. Also the iPhone 5 has an excellent reflectance ratio which makes it the best and clearest display for outside use even under direct sunlight.
Camera
In case of the camera, both the phones feature an 8 MP camera with LED flash. However the iPhone 5 has a better front faced camera at 1.3 MP compared to the iPhone 4S’s 0.3 MP front facing camera.
OS
Both the phones run the latest version of the iOS. Hence there is basically no difference between the experience of running either the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5. The only difference is that due to the larger display of the iPhone 5, more number of icons can be viewed.
Hardware
The iPhone 4S packs in an Apple A5 800 MHz processor with a 512 MB of RAM. While the newer iPhone 5 packs in the latest A6 processor at 1 GHz with a 1 GB of RAM. Although it is seen that the iPhone 5 fares better in specifications on paper, but still the performance is almost same for both. Both the phones are well equipped to run multiple applications and games with no problems at all. Regarding storage, the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S both offer either 16 GB, 32 GB or a 64 GB memory space. And in case of web browsing the iPhone 5 beats the iPhone 4S when it comes to 4G LTE connectivity.
Verdict
Although in terms of performance and specs, the iPhone 4S and 5 fare equally, but the iPhone 5 has a lot of improved features like the awesome quality of display, lighter in weight, etc. Hence the iPhone 5 is a significant improvement over the iPhone 4S.
