Career is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a person’s [highlight-yellow] “course or progress through life – or a distinct portion of life “.

The etymology of the term comes from the Latin word carrera, which means race (as in “rat race“)

If you are one of the many people out there who have considered making a career change but don’t know where to begin, maybe the following information will shed some light for you. There are various reasons hidden behind changing ones present job position; perhaps you find your work tedious and have realized that opportunities are limited. Or maybe you are unemployed or facing unemployment due to the recent collapse in the economy. When a person starts to ask questions about their future, it may be a sign that it is time to go back to school. For instance, if you have been working in an office setting as an administrators assistant and feel stuck, earning your AA in Business Administration online or at a college campus will give you the leverage you need to get a promotion.

[highlight-yellow]Regardless of one’s reasons, the right and suitable career is somewhere out there waiting to meet you.[/highlight-yellow]

Here at SkyTechGeek we delved into some basic methods which may prove useful and may pave the way for you to discover and find the best career path for you; within mapping out the road by which to traverse upon, courage to make a change, researching options, helping you to identify your hidden strengths and learning new skills.

Finding Meaningful & Appropriate Work in Today’s World

You may end up feeling entrapped and consumed by thinking the sole purpose of working is to make  enough money by which to merely survive. If you are unsatisfied with your job, it takes a toll on your physical and mental health, you may feel burned out and frustrated, anxious, depressed, or unable to enjoy time at home knowing another workday is ahead.

The most important thing is if you won’t find that you are suitable for this job, then it will be hard for you to keep the momentum or being able to advance in your career. One achieves success in their career if they are passionate and committed towards their career.

Whether you are looking to embark upon the open job market or contemplating a career change, the first step in choosing a fulfilling and self suited career is to uncover the hidden possibilities and skills which are lying dormant and discover your inner strengths, and activities which bring out those particular skills.

Creating New Possibilities

The first step while contemplating about a career change is to think carefully about what really drives you. It could be difficult for one to get over some basic ideas such as “ what pays the most” or “what is most secure” due to the today’s economy.

Discovering what your hidden interests and skills may be, will propel you to become more passionate about it. This can make you re-consider those jobs which you might not have considered in the past.

Explore Career Opportunities

One should always concentrate  and harness their skills on things which they love to do. What have you dreamed of doing in the past? What do you enjoy doing? You should jot down whatever comes to mind first, it doesn’t matter how improbable it is.

Look for clues everywhere. Ask yourself why certain activities make you happy and pay attention to times when you are really enjoying yourself.

Be patient. Remember that your plight may take some time and you might have to go down a few different alleys before finding the right career path. Time and introspection will help you identify the activities you most enjoy and that bring you true satisfaction.

Get Over to Career Obstacles

A job or a career is full of challenges, and certain jobs always come with new challenges, and there are numerous reasons which might make you think that changing careers is not possible. Here are some common obstacles that are considered as major issues while choosing a certain career.

a) New Job = Greater Work Load

Changing careers does require a substantial time investment. Seeking a new job or career will add stress to ones daily life.

However remember that it doesn’t happen all at once, if you sit back, relax and map out a rough plan of attack, breaking down larger tasks into smaller ones, you will find that things will be more manageable than one would ever have imagined.

b) Lack of Skills – Lack of Opportunity

Most of us believe that we are not skilled enough or simply inadequate, therefore we abandon the pursuit of striving towards something better.

Reality works somewhat differently however : you may be unaware of the skills which you possess, or you have never considered your marketability due to low self esteem.

If one allows inner reflection, they may just come to the realization that they probably have more skills than they could have ever imagined. Skills which have been learnt and gained not only from your job but from your hobbies, schooling, college, and life experiences.

In today’s global economy and with the way the economic structure is de-fragmenting, it might feel like too much of a risk to consider changing careers. However if you are unhappy in your current job, doing research on other options will only benefit you in the long run.

You may find a career with a more stable long term outlook than your current career. And you don’t need to quit the job you have, until  [highlight-yellow]you are more comfortable with your chosen career path.[/highlight-yellow]

c) I’m too Old for A New Job

You can choose to see yourself as over the best years of your life, setting yourself up for disappointments and failures for the remaining years of the life youve got left ; or you can see yourself [highlight-yellow]moving into the best years of your life [/highlight-yellow], as you may have finally figured out what it really is that you want to do.

By pursuing your dreams and interests now, you can live the next half of your life doing what makes you happiest. These days, 40 or 50 are still considered young with many years of vibrancy left to face and fulfill.

Making a midlife transition shows that we realize that life lasts a lot longer than we typically think it does and we have only lived half of it or even less than half!

Therefore , do not fear making career or life changes, and believe that the best is yet to come! [highlight-yellow] but overall : find what is inside of YOU ! [/highlight-yellow]

There’s a reason why many people finally do what they love after retirement. [highlight-yellow] Don’t let the idea of “being too old” or “it’s too late to do that”- hold you back and defeat you from doing what you truly enjoy. [/highlight-yellow]

Instead think that you’re going to make this midlife transition or career change, because you still have many great years ahead of you to spend your life living in the way that inspires you the most.

Don’t rush into a change because of unhappiness in your current job.

Don’t quit your current job till you are confident about the change.

Ease slowly into your new career.

Break down large goals into smaller ones and try to accomplish at least one small thing a day to keep the momentum going.

Pace yourself and don’t take on too much at once.

….and dont forget to smile along the way 🙂

Remember, that the Road to Success is not straight: There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, caution lights called family, and you will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare tire called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith, and a driver called God, you will make it to a place called success!
