A lot of manufacturers have tried to dominate the electric car market, but one which has consistently led the way is BMW. Here, we’ll look at the brief history of BMW’s stylish hybrid and electric cars.

Where it all began

BMW first launched into the electric car market back in 1972. It all started with the 1602e model, which was actually used within the 1972 Olympics in Munich. As it didn’t have a combustion motor internally, it didn’t produce a lot of fumes, making it the perfect choice to lead out a group of long-distance runners.

This first electric car contained a total of twelve 12v batteries. This meant they really weighed the car down, weighing a staggering 771lbs combined. The car was also only able to travel for approximately 37 miles per charge so unsurprisingly it never really took off.

The BMW E1

After years of development, BMW managed to come up with a newer, more impressive electric model known as the BMW E1. This closely resembled the electric cars we see today and offered a very stylish, sleek design. However, even though it was admittedly ahead of its time, the model never made it to production.

The BMW i3

The electric car that really won drivers over with BMW, was the i3. Developed in 2013, this impressive car is still available today. It is capable of covering up to 114 miles on a single charge without the gasoline range extender. The model is definitely one of the most impressive on the market. However, due to its initial cost, buyers should consider taking out a warranty for BMW, just in case anything does go wrong.

The BMW i8

BMW hasn’t stopped creating impressive electric models. It has unveiled the new BMW i8, a futuristic sporty model that buyers are sure to love. However, it’s $140,000 price tag may make it a little unobtainable to many buyers!

As you can see, BMW have been creating electric vehicles for over 40 years. While many of their models didn’t exactly take off, due to environmental issues, more buyers than ever before are flocking to electric cars. This has seen the BMW i3 model really shoot up in popularity.
