Is So Much Technology In Education Beneficial

This has been a serious topic of discourse, since the onset of digital technology. It has been said by most educational researchers that, ” the use of the computer for studies tends to decrease a studen’st average performance by approximately one-fifth of the standard deviation” ( Susan Payne Carter, Kyle Greenberg and Michael S. Walker).

Digital technology could be very helpful because, instead of just reading and cramming all those large books that the teacher gave in class for our assignments tomorrow, students can just simply gain access to the Internet through their laptops, tablets, or mobile phones and get a whole lot of information on e-books and a whole lot of accessible information. Digital technology has also been helpful as a means of communication; students can now get in close touch with their colleagues and peers very quickly and seek homework help answers on Facebook and all other social-media, it’s that easy! But according to some researchers these benefits has been lopsided by lack of patience by students who apply this use for their studies.

Digital technology has also been beneficial, in the view by some individual students, as computers being a representative of teachers in their classroom. We can see all around us how students carry their laptops and can be able to view a teacher’s course material and Internet almost in any environment he is; this simply means technology allows learning anywhere and anytime. Digital technology has also been found to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of what he/she has learnt in their respective classrooms.

And a much more observant skill in the face of digital technology being beneficial to schools, is the level of collaborations on projects by
students, in which they may not be in close contact for a time. The World Wide Web has been also found to have stopped the level of deforestation to some levels because students do not have to be burdened by tons of textbooks and exercise books, as given to them by their teachers in the classrooms. An average laptop just weighs about 5lb and it’s accessible to an Internet, also having a storage capacity of over 60GB and can hold about 3 million pages with diagrams, and figures.

Digital technology has also been found to have tools that can be helpful to examiners when marking a student’s exams. This allows the examiners to look beyond the scores of such students and let’s such examiners create more in-depth analysis on the level of understanding of such students, thereby creating a richer perspective of how students understand their subject.

Digital technology has been so beneficial for school curricula, that it has been both helpful to students as well as our teachers, eventually making them good learners and teachers in their subjects. Now the issue is this; many of these benefits also come with its negative attribute. So this makes the application of such technologies in the classroom to be wholly reliant on the benefits rather than the negativity to the teachers in their classrooms.
