7 Bad Designs Mistakes to Avoid

There are a lot of things to keep in mind when designing your website. This list serves as a warning sign for things to avoid. While designing, we recommend always keeping the C.A.R.P. principles in mind.

They work in conjunction with this list!

web design mistakes to avoid

1. Not Mobile Friendly

This is kick right to the knees. If your website is designed on a computer, without a mobile option available, users will most likely leave.

Desktop versions are often too big to fit on small phone screens. They require lots of scrolling and zooming-in to even read content.

Make sure your website has an optimized mobile friendly version.

2. Ambiguity

You ever go to those sites and think, “Wait…is this what I clicked?”

A website that doesn’t state the purpose of your company, and why your company stands out from the rest is easily passable. Right off the bat make sure people know who you are, what you’re about, and why you’re the best.

3. No Search Bar

For people with specific needs in mind, it can be infuriating to dig through blog pages, about articles, or product lists.

Make it easy on your traffic. Give them a search bar.

This saves customers headaches and also makes them more willing to come back.

4. Too Many Pictures

Pictures do speak 1000 words. But too many pictures means someone’s talking too much. Even if they’re professional images!

The basic rule here is DON’T CLUTTER your website.

Use pictures for balance and information when necessary. Too much will distract the eye.

We’ve all had to dig through those articles that are trying to tell you about 75 different things at once.

5. Headings

Level 1 and level 2 headings are a necessity. If all your text is the same shape and size, people will close out before they start reading.

Create a hierarchy so people can skim and benefit from your site rather than work through it.

If you’re using a common platform like WordPress to build your site and need some design layering help, we recommend WP SiteKit. The headings on platform sites can get tricky, so reaching out to the pros is always beneficial!

6. Chain Links and Over-Text

You don’t want too many links on your website’s pages.

Links do help, don’t get us wrong, you need them for SEO. But if your pages are starting to look like fence work of underlined blue text then it’s going to deter people.

Make sure there’s a balance to avoid bad visual design.

That goes for the amount of text the eye has to take in at once too. If you have paragraph after paragraph with little to no breaks, it’s bad design.

Break stuff up. Use balance.

7. Contact

If you don’t have a contact us page that’s easily accessible in your website, you’re frustrating customers and missing out on major business opportunities. The contact page is where people can reach out, ask questions, and strike offers.

Contact us boxes are popular but so are email and phone numbers.
