How Hard is it to Build a Combat Robot?

To be blunt; building a combat robot is hard. That said, there’s an awful lot of enjoyment one can get out of the effort! Roll up your sleeves and get to work! After all, if you enjoy a challenge and have a passion for cool machines, you’ll find a lot of satisfaction in building your own combat robot.

But how can it be done? What will you need? How long might it take? Well, allow us to keep you in the know here. The show Robot Wars might have ended last year, but don’t let that dash your own hopes for invention and creativity! Obviously, you can’t and shouldn’t create anything lethal to humans, but something that can tear up a fellow robot would be epic!

Consequently, here’s what you can expect when it comes to building your very own combat robot.

Decide and Plan

Building a combat robot isn’t something you do in a matter of moments; it’s a project that can last weeks and even months, depending on the speed you work at. One way to make the process easier on yourself is by spending some time deciding what it is you want to build, when you’ll build it, and what equipment you’ll need. If you fail to really map out your effort, you’re going to encounter more hurdles than is necessary and make things harder.

Therefore, start by planning your time – pencil in dates on your calendar where you can set time aside and get to work. Budget effectively and get all your tools from companies like RS Components, and set up your workstation – whether that’s your garage, a friends work area, or a commercially available space. Draw your designs and work out exactly what you want your robot to achieve. Get all your logistics ironed out first, because then your effort will go smoothly from conception to completion without any hiccups or mental blocks along the way.

What You’ll Need

Robots are obviously assembled out of a variety of components, and if you’re sufficiently equipped half the job is done already. Chances are, you’ll require a mixture of switches, screws and fasteners, soldering irons, motors (for both mobility and weaponry), wheels and tyres, batteries, wires, chassis materials (metals or carbon fibre), and an RC receiver. Your needs will vary depending on what you’re attempting to build, but that list will cover the broad strokes.

Keep in mind how all your various materials and components work in tandem with one another. What will you need to get your robot upright if it’s flipped over? Also, if you use heavier materials on your chassis for armour, you may sacrifice your robot’s mobility and agility. Ultimately, excess demands more hard work, so try to be economical in terms of what you use and feature. You’ll have less work to do, and your robot will be more focused and functional in design.
