How to Drive in Las Vegas

Driving in Las Vegas isn’t hard. It’s more or less the same as driving in any other major city. However, if you are just getting started or are new in town, it’s best to familiarize yourself with the best driving practices to avoid getting into trouble. If you are coming from elsewhere in the US – or if you aren’t familiar to Las Vegas roads, then here are some tips “how to drive in Las Vegas”.

How to get around

If you are moving from one point to another, you need to know what to expect from traffic. During the rush hours, like 7:00 to 9:00 AM and 4:00 to 6:00 PM, you’ll almost always encounter a traffic snarl-up – just as you would in different other cities. However, you may underestimate just what this city’s traffic looks like. The Strip, which is packed with numerous attractions and casinos, gets the most traffic even during regular hours.

So, the best idea is to use alternative roads like Frank Sinatra Drive, Industrial Road, or Paradise Road to avoid traffic. On top of that, it’s also a good idea to be knowledgeable about road works and you can also arrange a party bus from Hialeah. The saying that you are the only sane driver on the road rings true in Las Vegas.

Understand the road rules

The Nevada speed limit for highways and thoroughfares is 70-75 mph and 45 mph respectively. Other places in the city require drivers to drive at 25-35 mph. It’s essential to always remember that in Vegas city, you will rarely get away with speeding. The same applies to driving under the influence, so you want to be very careful not to drink and drive, hoping you would be lucky. But on the lighter side, you will be glad that it’s legal to turn Right on a red light after coming to a stop or making a U-turn unless otherwise specified.

In Vegas, the yellow traffic lights don’t mean caution or slow down. Instead, it means to drive on. Stopping on yellow in Vegas can get you assaulted, or rear-ended. Green light (at intercessions) doesn’t mean go either. It means proceed with caution. When you spot a green light after stopping at traffic, wait for five seconds or more before driving on – otherwise, you may get sideswiped by an underinsured or uninsured driver, or worse, a hit and run driver.

Parking your car

At some point in your driving, you’ll need to park your car and run some errands before proceeding with your journey. If you are heading for some fun in one of the hotels, restaurants or in town, then you do not need to worry about parking because almost every recreational facility offers parking solutions for their guests. You can opt for self-parking if you want something free or inexpensive – though it’ll take you some time to find a spot. Better yet, you can use valet parking (if available). If you are not visiting a hotel or casino, you have the option of parking on a garage or lot. Street parking is also an option, though we recommend using it if it’s the only option you have.
