Security Camera Systems for Extreme Weather Locations

When searching for a new home security system, homeowners may not think about the fact that not all cameras are created equally. In fact, many cannot stand up to intense heat or extreme cold. While you’re researching and shopping for a security camera systems for your home, here are some weather-related features to look for.

Ingress Protection

Let’s start at the beginning. The main difference between security camera systems designed for outside applications and those made for indoor use is that the more robust ones have an Ingress Protection (IP) rating. This number is made up of two digits, and each number refers to a specific type of protection. The first can be anywhere 0 to 6, and the second goes from 0 to 9.

The first number refers to each camera’s ability to keep out solid objects like dust, small rocks or debris. The higher the number, the more protection you have. A rating of 6 provides complete protection against all particulates. The second number is the system’s moisture defense. Again, the higher the number, the better. For instance, if you have an IP x9 security camera, it can handle jets of water while a rating of 0 has no water-tolerance at all.

In general, you should get a security camera system that has an IP rating of at least 66 if you will be using it outdoors, but you may need IP 67 for some applications.

Temperature Tolerance

It is important to look at the temperature tolerances of the security camera systems you are considering as well. Some security camera systems are not equipped to handle extreme temperatures — including some that meet that IP 66 standard. For instance, some systems are useless in temperatures below 32 degrees. You may as well forget it if you live anywhere that gets snow, ever.

Similarly, if you live where the mercury tops 104 degrees, you will need to look for a security camera system that can function dependably in extreme heat. Some devices cannot handle hot weather. Even if they can function, they may not function dependably.
Plus, don’t forget that temperature function is more than what a thermometer reads. The right reflection, prolonged exposure, freezing winds, these could all cause your system to fail if it gets close to the far reaches of its temperature capabilities.

Security Camera Coverage for Your Climate

Security camera systems may offer many of the same features, but there can be significant differences in the conditions those cameras can handle. If you plan to use video monitoring to help secure your property outside, you will need a network of cameras that are up to the challenge. Lorex’s Nocturnal camera systems provide year-round coverage, IP67 waterproof ratings, and continue to operate through heavy rainstorms, extreme snowfalls, blisteringly hot temps and sub-zero freezing climates.
